There are two important factors that need to be considered when discussing whether this service is worth your hard-earned money:
- Quality of the meals
- Cost vs alternatives
Let’s begin with the cost:
How much you pay per meal depends on how big your order is. You can pay as little as $7.99 per meal, to as much as $11.50 per meal. At first glance, it’s clear that this isn’t a cheap service, but, depending on your lifestyle, there is an opportunity for you to save money.
I’ll take myself as an example, as a fellow resident of NYC, it’s become normal to either order lunch or dinner out on a daily basis. If you’re someone that is ordering delivery from a local restaurant several times per week, then Freshly does make sense for you. Paying $8-$11.50 per meal is considerably better than paying $12-$20 for local dinner delivery, especially once you consider the 10-20% tip surcharge on your delivery.
On the flip side, if you love cooking all your meals, and find yourself in a supermarket every weekend, prepping your meals for the rest of the week, then Freshly does not make sense. Without question, you can replicate the meals you’ll find in Freshly for $3-$4 by shopping for your own ingredients and spending time in your kitchen cooking.
How good are the meals?
By this point, we’ve had about 25-30 different Freshly meals delivered. There were some meals that we absolutely loved, and there were some that we really didn’t care for. Overall, are the meals tasty? Yes. Are they restaurant quality? Not really.
Which is where we are left at a tricky situation. At $11.50 per meal, you have many alternatives, such as Chipotle or Sweet Green, two popular franchise in NYC. On the other hand, if you’re paying $7.99 per meal, you begin to really get a bang for your buck.
So what we’re trying to say is that the “quality” of the meal really depends on how much you end up paying for the meal. To pay $7.99 per meal, you will have to have 12 meals delivered weekly. That is the equivalent of eating 2 Freshly meals every day, for 6 days a week. That does sound a bit overwhelming, but if you are living with a spouse or a roommate, it’s a lot more manageable.
What’s interesting is that if you order 6 or 9 meals per week, you’ll pay $8.99 per meal – not bad.
The worst deal is having 4 meals delivered per week, since then there is a hike in the price per meal to $11.50.
